Vegans are fun to joke about, and all, after all, there's something about a group of people that takes themselves so seriously without an ounce of levity or ability to joke about the subject that lends that same group of people to be a prime target for humor. Heck, there's a reason why community discussions about vegans and jokes about vegans are everywhere on the internet.
That being said, if you know that your friends have something that they're humorless about, it's hard to be surprised when they react negatively to you, making them the rear end of your joke. I say this as someone with a severe food allergy who grew up with 90s and 00s comedies that loved using the "look at this nerd having a deadly anaphylactic allergic reaction" trope, which—to this day—leads people to have inappropriate reactions when someone suffers an allergic reaction.
So, like anyone with food restrictions, I'm pretty dark when it comes to the subject. Sure, everyone has the responsibility to manage their own restrictions, but when you know someone's restrictions and knowingly present them with something that is potentially unsafe (or flavored as something unsafe) as a prank… you're 100% in the wrong every time.
This couple knowingly presented their vegan friends with meat-flavored snacks. While they double and triple-checked to make sure there were no non-vegan ingredients in the seasoning, their account of events leads us to believe that they didn't disclose the nature of the seasoning to their guests to let them check for themselves before deciding whether or not to eat it—as one would if they were serving something that was potentially borderline and cared about their friends with food restrictions.
The author, who prepared the snacks, writes with derision about their friend's dietary restrictions, seemingly using their standoffishness and contempt in order to separate their own accountability and embarrassment. While commenters were torn as to whether or not the author was in the wrong, it seems that many readers have misinterpreted the post. It seems pretty clear, on rereading, that the bacon powder was placed on the popcorn by the hosts prior to the event—not by the guests themselves, as evidenced by the fact that the author references that they "pulled out" the container of flavoring during the disagreement.
